His ID card says Julien. Maya has written him an evening as Thomas. In an apartment that climbs floor by floor, he plays the part as well as he can, until a hand lingers one second too long and the man he actually is takes his place.

We all perform a version of ourselves for the people we want to be loved by. Misery is about what happens when that performance starts to slip. Nothing important is said out loud. It’s in where people stand, and in a hand held one second too long.
